Hi, I’m Javier. I break software for a living, and I’ve been doing it for close to three decades.

That’s the short version of “QA Global Practice Lead.” The longer version is that I spend my days figuring out how a platform with 300+ developers pushing code can ship without setting itself on fire — which turns out to be less about finding bugs and more about designing the systems that catch them.

What you’ll find here

Notes on infrastructure, data, and development. Mostly the things I had to figure out the hard way and wished someone had written down: a Docker build that wouldn’t cache properly, an nginx directive that silently cancels three others, a RAG pipeline that retrieves confidently wrong answers.

I write these partly for you and mostly for me-in-six-months, who will have forgotten all of it.

The day job

I’ve been at CEMEX since 2018, leading the QA practice across enterprise digital transformation programs.

Before that, I was working in several companies in all branches of Software testing.

What I’m into right now

AI, but the unglamorous parts. I did a Master’s in Artificial Intelligence and an MLOps diploma, and what actually holds my attention is the plumbing: retrieval that works, graph RAGs, agent frameworks (Semantic Kernel, LlamaIndex), and MCP clients and servers. I’m ISTQB certified in AI Testing and I train teams on it — testing a non-deterministic system is a genuinely different problem, and most of the industry is still figuring it out.

I also can’t stop building infrastructure I don’t strictly need. This site is a good example: Quarto compiled into a multi-stage image, built in CI, pushed to GHCR, served by a hardened Nginx behind a shared Caddy that terminates TLS. It’s a blog. It absolutely did not require any of that.

The paper trail

A Ph.D. in Engineering (Information Technology) and a Master’s in Information Systems from Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, a Master’s in Artificial Intelligence from UNIR México, an MBA from TecMilenio, and — where it started — a B.S. in Electronic Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico de Saltillo. PMP, CSTE, and CSQA from back when those were the ones to have.
